On November 15, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) announced the results of the elections of its new members and corresponding members. Among the elected members is Alexander D. Makatsariya, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Clinical Institute of Child Health of the Sechenov University and Vice-President of the Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. A.D. Makatsariya is one of the leading obstetricians-gynecologists specializing in hemostaseology. He is the founder of a novel scientific field - clinical hemostaseology in obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology. In 1981 Prof. Makatsariya defended his doctoral thesis on "Pathogenesis, principles of diagnostics and therapy of disseminated intravascular blood coagulation syndrome in severe forms of obstetric pathology". He and his research team are studying the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of genetically determined forms of thrombophilia (Leiden's V-mutation factor, prothrombin mutation, hyperhomocysteinemia) discovered just in the 1990s. Based on these mechanisms, novel methods of diagnostics and prophylaxis of recurrent thrombotic complications of pregnancy have been developed and put into practice. In recent years, Prof. Makatsariya also focused on the role of hereditary thrombophilia and antiphospholipid syndrome in the complications developing in pregnant women, including usual nephritis, gestosis, fetal death, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), premature placental detachment, as well as their role in gynecological and onco-gynecological diseases. In 1995-1997, Dr. Makatsariya was elected the Chairperson of the Board on thrombosis and hemorrhage in obstetrics, gynecology and neonatology of the International Association on Thrombosis and Hemorrhages. Currently, he is a full member of the International Academy of Clinical Problems of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (Houston, USA). As a visiting professor, Dr. Makatsariya travelled to the Cornell University (USA) in 2014 and 2018 and to the University of Vienna in 2018. In 2018, Prof. A.D. Makatsariya was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the Vienna University (Austria) and the title of Honorary Professor at the International University of Dubrovnik (Croatia). In 2019, Alexander D. Makatsariya was the first obstetrician-gynecologist from Russia to be awarded the William Lilaye Gold Medal of the International Society "Fetus as a Patient" for his contribution in clinical hemostaseology applied to perinatal medicine. A.D. Makatsariya is an outstanding organizer of scientific and educational activities. He maintains close working relations with world's leading scientists and regularly represents Russia at major national and international congresses and conferences. His lectures and seminars are very popular among medical students and young specialists. Upon his invitation, a number of scientists from Vienna (Austria), Sorbonne (Paris) and Montpellier (France), McMaster University (Canada), Universities of Rome, Perugia and Brescia (Italy), Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (Israel) got the opportunity to work at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sechenov University. Prof. Makatsariya is the author of more than 1200 scientific papers published in Russian and International leading journals. Among his publications, there are over 40 books, including "Thrombosis and thromboembolism in obstetric and gynecological practice" (2007), "System syndromes in obstetric and gynecological clinic" (2010), "Thrombohemorrhagic complications in obstetric and gynecological practice" (2011), and "Thrombotic microangiopathy in obstetrics" (2017). In 2015, a book titled "High Risk Pregnancy" was published jointly by Prof. Makatsariya and Prof. F. Chervenak of the Cornell University (USA). In 2017, together with Prof. Brenner (Israel), a book titled "Arterial and Venous Thrombosis in Obstetric Practice" was published. A.D. Makatsariya is a member of the editorial board of leading journals such as “Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine” and “Prenatal Cardiology”, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of the “Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction”. Under his leadership, this journal is gradually improving its impact factor and other bibliographic indicators. From October 2019, the journal is being indexed in Scopus. We warmly congratulate Prof. Alexander D. Makatsariya on his election as a Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences! This high title was given to him by right in recognition of his scientific, educational and public activity, scientific and educational initiatives and devotion to colleagues and patients alike, his adherence to high ethical standards in science, his talent as a doctor, a scientist, and a teacher. We are sure that this award will open new opportunities and venues in his professional career! Editorial staff, Editorial board of the |
